whatever your heart needs

9 May

MAKING: Some kind of cheese ravioli from the Trader, topped with asparagus sauteed in olive oil. A real spring treat. Oh god I love asparagus. So much.

LISTENING: Delta Spirit, Delta Spirit

Man, I hate it when bands just use their name as an album title. WE GET IT, THAT’S YOUR BAND’S NAME AND YOU WANT PEOPLE TO REMEMBER IT. It’s like having a child and naming it ‘Child.’  So boring. You know what’s not boring? The artwork on this terribly titled record! It’s fascinating! And the songs! They are great! Super catchy shit! I still wish these dudes hadn’t self-titled their THIRD LP.  They get played in CVS; how much more famous can you possibly be?

Delta Spirit, “California”

ready, willing, and able

25 Feb

MAKING: Spinach and ricotta ravioli with tomato sauce and even MORE SPINACH, cos I am about all about health/feel bad not eating the shit I buy at the farmers’ market. WASTE NOT, WANT NOT, YO.

LISTENING: Delta Spirit, History from Below

Yeah, I am having a real problem with Delta Spirit these days. Yup. A real issue.

Delta Spirit, “White Table”

the way we kissed that night

20 Feb

MAKING: The other day my friend Aimee told me that one of the main things she likes about this here blog is that I never take pictures of “a plate of just spaghetti or something.” Well, now I feel bad, cos here’s today’s post: a heaping portion of angel hair pasta with sauce from a jar and cheese from a goddamn shaker. At least there is some arugula in the mix, eh? SO SORRY AIMS.

LISTENING: Delta Spirit, The Waits Room EP

Totally not my record! God I wish it was! This is my boyfriend’s, and I borrowed it for an extended period of time because I COULD NOT STOP LISTENING TO IT. Jesus I love Delta Spirit. I love their name, their copious use of a harmonica, their heartfelt lyrics, their plaid shirts. This is a super-solid EP featuring stripped down versions of songs that appear on other albums. It’s perfectly mellow and has a super-great cover (God I am such a sucker for wordless album covers).

Delta Spirit, Bushwick Blues

nothing compared to me

7 Feb

MAKING: These pretty terrible edamame nuggets from Trader Joe’s that I thought I’d try on a whim. BAD MOVE. They were salty and weirdly textured and not at all satisfying. Ugh. At least the arugula was a delight!

LISTENING: Delta Spirit, History From Below (“Bushwick Blues”)

In the interest of full disclosure, this is totally not my record; it’s my boyfriend’s and he is also pals with these dudes. BUT THAT IS NOT WHY I LISTENED TO IT. No, no! This album  is amazing, all jangly guitars and harmonies and stellar storytelling. The song featured above, “Bushwick Blues,” kind of took over my life for a few days. Listen at yer own risk. One of the best album covers in recent years. Just makes me want to load up a car with snacks and towels and beer and drive to a swimmin’ hole and JUMP RIGHT THE HELL IN.
